Joe Daniel Football Quick Clinic

The Joe Daniel Football Quick Clinic is short, informative podcasts for American Football Coaches. I record them in the car on the way to practice, so you're not here for the audio quality. And if you're not a football coach, you probably won't like the show. Just a warning. If you are a coach... you're going to get some great ideas.

The Outside Veer continues to expand on your Option package. This play hits one man wider than the Inside Veer we talked about in the Quick Clinic on the Inside Veer Option.

The Outside Veer is great to use when you need to expand your attack and option a wider defender. It is particularly good with a 7-technique Defensive End in the 4-4 or 4-2-5 Defense.

One of my primary sources in putting this episode together was the Offensive Football Strategies book, a collection of older football coaching articles published by the AFCA.

Tackling circuits are a great way to get lots of reps on the single most important aspect of defensive football. And do it in a short time.

When you put together a circuit, it's important that you are trying to address only one significant problem with each drill. That will keep your practice moving along efficiently.

This is a great way to use your entire coaching staff, so that your players get to work with everyone.

In this episode I also told you about a special gift for JDFB Quick Clinic listeners, my Foundations of the 4-2-5 Defense video series. You can get access now at http://425defense.com/podcast.

Taking it way back to the 1960's and the foundations of the Split Back Veer option offense. This is the original Triple Option run game.

And it still works today. Probably more so than ever. In different versions and variations, but we're going back to the beginning.

Split Back Veer is the Triple Option reading the first man over the Tackle.

One of the resources I used in putting this together, and still one of my favorites, is the AFCA's Offensive Football Strategies manual.

In this episode I also mentioned a special gift for JDFB Quick Clinic listeners, my Foundations of the 4-2-5 Defense video series. Visit http://425defense.com/podcast to get access now.

The only guy closer to the football than the Center, is the Odd Front Nose Guard. In your 33 Stack Defense or 3-4 Defense, the play of this guy is critical.

You can play him in two different ways. Either use a big, strong 2-Gap Nose Guard, or get your guy moving using slant calls.

I mentioned an article from JoeDanielFootball.com on 3 ways to slant, you can check that article out here.

What’s the worst feeling in football? Making a couple of huge run stops on the goal line. Only to give up that touchdown pass to a wide open receiver in the end zone.

Down on the goal line we put a heavy focus on stopping the run. But the pass is going to be an option for the offense, too.

Today on Joe Daniel Football Quick Clinic, I’ll talk about how to prepare your coverage to make the stop on the goal line - without sacrificing your run defense.

There’s not a tougher situation in defensive coaching than defending the goal line. After all, you wouldn’t be in this situation if your team was playing great.

But the Goal Line Stand can be a huge momentum swing for your defense. And you entire team. Not to mention, the opponent.

In today’s episode of The Joe Daniel Football Quick Clinic, we’ll talk about lining up in your 6-3 or 5-4 Defense to shut down the run on the goal line.

The game is over. But you’re still on the clock.

Whether it’s a tough loss or a big win for your football team, the coach is still responsible for setting an example of sportsmanship.

In this episode of The Joe Daniel Football Quick Clinic, I’ll give you my tips for how to handle the end of the game sportsmanship, no matter what the other team has done.

In past episodes of The Quick Clinic, I’ve talked about Under Center and Pistol alignment for the Quarterback.

And they’re just that. Alignments. The alignment doesn’t change your entire offense.

There are certain advantages of using the different alignments. The shotgun alignment is no exception. But the advantages might not be what you’re thinking!

Listen to this episode of The Joe Daniel Football Quick Clinic to find out how to get the most out of Shotgun alignment for your Quarterback.

I get this question a lot. Or this confuse, at least.

“Coach we run the 4-4 Defense. I like your 4-2-5 Defense but…”

What’s the real difference? It’s not too complicated. There isn’t one. Not a really significant difference, anyway. They’re just names.

Listen to this episode of Joe Daniel Football Quick Clinic to find out why!

I also mentioned another resource - the now infamous Episode 80 of The Football Coaching Podcast.

It must be 7 on 7 Season. Otherwise how often are you going to use 2-Man?

If you’ve got a great passing team on the schedule this season, then the answer is… at least once. There is no better coverage for stopping the pass. There’s also no worse coverage for defending the run.

Running Cover 2 / Man Under coverage on your defense requires you to know how and why to use it. This episode will help you get the most out of your 2-man cover package.

Why would you use the Pistol Alignment for your Quarterback? What are the advantages?

That’s the question I’m answering today in the Quick Clinic.

The Pistol alignment gives your Quarterback a little more room to see down the field. Without sacrificing the downhill run game that you would lose in a Gun alignment.

Today's episode comes from a JDFB Insider question about how to choose your best option at Quarterback. How do you decide which guy will be THE GUY for your football team?

I’ve identified two key factors in choosing a Quarterback. They may seem pretty obvious, but don’t forget them.

I mentioned Darrin Slack’s C4 videos, which you can find here: https://www.quarterbackacademy.com/product/quarterback-self-correct-system/

I’ll also talk about my favorite Quarterback Drill to help your players improve. It’s the Triangle Weight Transfer drill and it’s included in The Pistol Power Offense System.

There’s nothing more important for a High School Defensive Coordinator to figure out, than knowing who their best player is. But there’s more to it than just finding the kid with the most yards and touchdowns.

In this episode of The JDFB Quick Clinic, I’ll go through 5 things to look for when evaluating the opponent’s offense for their ‘best player’.

The Jet Sweep is a great play. But not just because you get running really fast.

There’s lots of reasons to use the Jet Sweep. It can be a key component to your offense. To setting up your offense.

In this episode of The JDFB Quick Clinic, I’ll give you the 3 main reasons your offense should use the Jet Sweep Play.

We incorporate the Jet Sweep into our Pistol Power Offense System. You can get a Free Video Series at https://joedanielfootball.com/ppo.

I love the Miami 4-3 Defense. But there’s one guy who can’t play this thing without.

The Mike Linebacker in the Miami 4-3 Defense is going to be in a war against 2-back offenses. He’s the reason this defense is so tough on the option, too.

There’s some important qualities you need to look for, though! I’ll talk about them in this edition of The Quick Clinic.

Get the basics of The Miami 4-3 Defense with this article: Coaching the 4-3 Defense: The Basics

You can align your Quarterback under center, in pistol or in the gun. Each alignment has advantages and disadvantages.

Under Center alignment is the traditional QB Alignment. Pistol and Gun have become much more popular in the last decade at the High School level.

In this episode of The Joe Daniel Football Quick Clinic, I’ll talk about why you should use the Under Center alignment for your quarterback.

Looking for a complete Offensive System that your team can actually afford? Check out The Pistol Power Offense System.

Don’t let the name fool you. We run from under center a lot.

When you’re running an Even Front Defense, there’s one dude that is hard to find. And completely irreplaceable.

The 3-technique Defensive Tackle, your strong Tackle, is extremely important. He’s the one true Defensive Tackle you need in a Miami 4-3 Defense. It’s hard to survive without him.

Big and strong. Low center of gravity. Active and athletic for his size.

One man cannot block him. Two men cannot move him. That’s the 3-tech.

We use a 3-Tech Defensive Tackle in the Miami 4-3 Defense and in the 4-2-5 Defense System. Both of those Systems are part of your JDFB Insider Membership.

One of the most important things for an Offensive Coordinator to know, is how many chances he has. You’ve got to know if it’s 4 down territory or not.

That’s a decision that needs to be made immediately. Not when you get to the 4th down situation.

Going into the game with a clear idea of how good your punt team is, or your field goal unit, will help you make the decision. But you also have to remain engaged with the game and sometimes… go with your gut!

With The Pistol Power Offense System, we have some great plays. But we have to know when 2 or 3 yards is going to be there, and when it’s not. Check out The Pistol Power Offense System at http://pistolpoweroffense.com.

I’m a really big fan of efficient in practice. There’s a time to teach and there’s a time to get reps.

We use circuits to get a lot of reps for the entire team, in a short period of time. It’s a great way to use your coaching staff.

Check out this episode to see how circuits can help speed up your football practice.

Inside JDFB Insider, within our systems and web clinics, I use a lot of different circuits you can check out. Click here for more information

Hurry Up, No Huddle offenses make everything a little tougher. On defense, we have to get the play in really fast.

That doesn’t mean you need to be one-dimensional. Just use one-word play calls! That concept goes great with the 33 Stack Defense, too.

There’s a delicate balance. You want to get everything you can out of watching game film. You do not want to waste your entire life in a dark room every weekend.

In this episode of JDFB Quick Clinic I’ll share steps you can take to break down football film. Without breaking down your life.

I don’t think there’s a set system to this. It’s a lot of feel. But you’ll get some good ideas that you can use for your team.

Mar 8, 2017

Do you need to script your offense? I think so. I wrote about that in this article.

But how much should you script? Totally different question. The answer is, as always, it depends.

To find out how to put together your Game Plan and figure out which plays I’m scripting, check out The Pistol Power Offense System

Every coverage has a weakness. No matter what anyone tells you, there is no solution to that problem.

It’s the beauty of football.

That includes Split Field, Pattern Match coverages like our Quarters Coverage system. You just have to know where to attack it.

Check out this episode of The Joe Daniel Football Quick Clinic to find out where your Offense can attack Quarters Coverage to move the football down the field.

I love Quarters Coverage. Yes, I love Cover 1. I like a spot drop Cover 3 for the simplicity. But the beauty of Quarters Coverage is the answer.

Built in answers to absolutely anything the offense can do to you. This is a coverage package I learned from Shap Boyd and that has been a favorite for years.

Quarters Coverage is a pattern match coverage. It takes a lot of time to teach, but you’ll be happy you invested in it in the end.

Listen to this episode of Joe Daniel Football Quick Clinic, then check out How To Coach Quarters Coverage for a video that explains all the different checks we use.
