Joe Daniel Football Quick Clinic

The Joe Daniel Football Quick Clinic is short, informative podcasts for American Football Coaches. I record them in the car on the way to practice, so you're not here for the audio quality. And if you're not a football coach, you probably won't like the show. Just a warning. If you are a coach... you're going to get some great ideas.

The perfect practice plan will fly by and end with everyone feeling confident. But how do you know the right split for your team?

Should your practice plans use split days for Offense and Defense? Or days focused on Offensive and Defensive practice?

If your team is a 2-platoon group, that’s an easy one. But when you aren’t 2-platoon, this is a key decision for your team’s practice planning success.

Should you 2-Gap your Defensive Linemen in the 3-5-3 Defense? Here’s one idea on how to get it done.

I’ve always been a proponent of slanting for your 3-5-3 Defensive Line. It’s what we teach in the 33 Stack Defensive System.

But there’s more than one way to be successful in coaching football. That’s true of pretty much everything in the game. And this week’s episode looks at another way to get the job done up front in your 3-5-3 Defense.

Gus sends in a question on Twitter about coaching 2-Gap Defensive Linemen in the 3-5-3 Defense. It’s a topic I’ve been studying more recently.

In this show I also mentioned Vinny Fazio’s 3-5-3 Defense book that you can find at eightlaces.org. I recently attended a great clinic session with Coach Fazio and love what he’s doing with this defense.

How do you adjust your 4-2-5 Defense to defend against a T-Formation attack? Check out these ideas.

The T-Formation isn’t the offensive football scheme of choice that it once was. Modern football has shifted to a lot more wide open attack.

But your 4-2-5 Defense, or any other modern defense your football team is running, better be prepared to defend those downhill rushing attacks with 32 Personnel.

Today’s question comes from Steve by email. He asks about defending a T-Formation with 2 Tight Ends using the 4-2-5 Defense.

I’ll share some adjustments, and considerations to make based on your personnel, in this episode!

Tackling is not about being ‘aggressive’ in today’s football. Tackling is about getting in the right position.

It doesn’t matter what style of tackling you teach. That’s a different argument.

Great tackling comes down to getting in the right position, and taking the momentum away from the ball carrier. If you can do that, you can get him to the ground.

Today’s topic comes from a Youth Football Coach whose players were tackling too high, and unable to hold on to finish the play. We’ll talk about how to drill your athletes for better tackling technique on the field.
